Rob Liefeld Says Goodbye to Marvel: What's Next for the Creator of Deadpool, Cable & X-Force

Rob Liefeld Retires from Marvel: The End of an Era

It's official. Rob Liefeld, the man who gave us Deadpool, Cable, Domino, and a whole roster of 90s comic book icons, is walking away from Marvel Comics for good.

Liefeld made the news public in his signature style, confirming that his current Deadpool Team-Up miniseries would be his final work for the House of Ideas. When asked to clarify, he was quite concise and poignant: "It's my last ever. Had a great time with Marvel over the last many decades."

The reasoning is surprisingly practical. Liefeld, now 58, has been candid about the physical realities of being a comic book artist.

"I figure I have five years left doing comic books before the eyes go," he said at New York Comic Con 2025. "I've already had to upgrade my glasses all the time, and I'm not doing that Lazik stuff. I'd be the guy that the laser blinds me, so that's not going to happen."

In 2009, David Benioff wrote X-Men Origins: Wolverine. In this movie, the character Deadpool is given arm-katanas, laser eyes, teleportation, and a sewn up mouth, none of which are in the comics.

In his retirement announcement from Deadpool specifically, Liefeld reflected on his legacy with the character: "No other auteur has combined to write and illustrate more Deadpool work. I'll complete this journey with over 1000 pages alongside my Mercenary Misfit."

He also pointed to Deadpool: Bad Blood, the original graphic novel he started in 2015, as a career highlight. It was Deadpool's first OGN and hit #1 on the charts, something he says "pumped my chest out farther than Captain America's."

Online commenters have offered a mixed bag of reactions to the news. Some fans are celebrating Liefeld's contributions and wishing him well, while others have taken the opportunity to revisit old criticisms of his art style (yes, the feet jokes are still going strong). There's also a contingent of readers who are genuinely curious about what a modern Youngblood might look like and whether Liefeld can recapture some of that early 90s energy.

Love him or not, Liefeld's impact on comics is hard to deny. Deadpool alone has become a cultural phenomenon, and characters like Cable and X-Force have been staples of the X-Men universe for decades.
