Exclusive Tips from Kyle Willis for People Attending MegaCon
Here are some insider tips for making your MegaCon experience the best it can be from a seasoned veteran of MegaCon, and comic book conventions in general for that matter, Comic Book Artist, Creator, and Comic Book Store owner Kyle Willis:
- If it's your first time attending MegaCon Orlando, and you aren't staying within walking distance, make sure you take an Uber or public transportation. Don't even bother trying to find a parking spot. It's going to be 40 bucks or more and you'll wait 2 hours to secure a spot. Just take an Uber.
- Everyone walking into the convention at the same time are going to start hitting all of the vendors that are right towards the front, this is a great moment for you to go all the way to the back and work your way towards the middle.
- Artist Alley is usually tucked in the back, do yourself a favor and go check out the next wave of up-and-coming talent. Artists Alley is often slept on, but the gems that await you there are priceless. If you want to be the kind of person that gets to tell the story of how you knew this amazing artist before they were famous, get your butt over to artist alley and support the independent local art scene, or there will be no scene to support. These guys are taking time off from the jobs that pay their bills, and they are spending a lot of money for a table and travel and hotel accommodations, the least you can do is go look at their work, extra points if you make a purchase and support them with your dollars.
- If you want to get signatures, find the booth where the Creator will be and figure out what times they will be appearing. Most of the big names have a sign that tells you what time they are going to be signing and plan out all of your signatures in advance.
- One thing I cannot stress enough, do not put your uncovered drink on anyone's table. Ever. Not to make change, not to look for your phone, not to find your business cards or make sure you have all of your belongings, do not put your drink on anyone's table. There is just too high a chance of it spilling or condensation ruining their product, it's disrespectful and we often don't think about it when we're doing things sometimes, so try and be mindful and don't put your drinks on anyone's table.
- If you don't have the money to support something you like with a purchase, then support them with a Facebook share or a follow on their Instagram, there's so much you can do to support these creators that doesn't involve handing them money. Keep in mind the artists are just as excited as you are. Engaging with fans with a collective appreciation of art is what it is all about!
