Hitting the Bricks at Cerebral Vortex Comics – Richmond, VA

March 28, 2025

My next stop was Cerebral Vortex Comics, located inside the Regency Shopping Mall at N Parham Rd, Richmond, VA 23229. Though it’s technically a mall store, it’s just a short walk from the entrance—easy to find and well worth the stop.

The shop occupies a large unit with an open floor plan. Tables lined both sides of the space, and a big double-sided row ran straight through the center, ending at the register along the back wall. Behind the counter, wall books were displayed securely and proudly. The layout made it easy to browse, and I found a solid batch of early Spawn issues—all under $10 a pop.

A cool detail: the walls were also decorated with vinyl records, adding some personality and vintage charm.

The owner, Jason Hamlin, was super friendly and quick to strike up a conversation. He told me he opened the brick-and-mortar location as a way to keep working the big conventions. And it’s a smart move—having a physical shop makes it easier to acquire collections, since most folks would rather drop by a storefront than meet someone off Marketplace or Craigslist.

The store was spacious, well-lit, and really well organized. My only suggestion? Maybe kick the A/C up a notch. But hey—cool air costs money, and comic shop margins are already razor thin, so I totally get it.

I wish Jason nothing but success with Cerebral Vortex, and I hope I have an excuse to pop back in someday.
